Summer Reading Lists

All students, from the incoming kindergarteners through eighth graders should be reading over the summer. Everyone knows how much I like to read, and so I’d like to make a plea that you show the importance of reading to your child/children. The goal here is to achieve a quality reading time where the student is focused and actually retaining the information. Let your child explore new genres and set aside some time everyday for reading. Reading over the summer keeps many skills sharpened so that your child is not overwhelmed in the fall when we return to school. We want to promote a LOVE for reading, so please encourage your child to pick reading materials which will spark his/her interests.

In addition to just plain reading for fun, for grades 3-5, students will be required to read a book which will be assigned to everyone. Listed below are the books for each rising 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. We will all be reading this one same book, and then completing activities, discussing and doing various projects connected with this book during the first few weeks of school in library class. Please have your child finish this book before school begins in August, as we will be completing activities in class based on this book. Addtional assigmens for grades 3-5 can be found on the link below for each grade. These will be collected by the homeroom teachers.

Please encourage your child to read this summer. As mentioned earlier, please find books which your student will enjoy. For the younger children, especially incoming kindergarten, you may have to read to your child, and this obviously is OK.

For rising 3rd graders (your child is going into 3rd grade), please have him/her read Tornado by Betsy Byars.

For rising 4th graders (your child is going into 4th grade), please have him/her read Frindle by Andrew Clement.

For rising 5th graders (your child is going into 5th grade), please have him/her read Help! I’m a Prisoner in the Library by Eth Clifford.

All titles should be available at Barnes and Noble and your public library branches. Both sites have access to our school’s summer reading lists and requirements.

Listed below, are some wonderful websites that list suggested reading for various grade levels. Have fun with these websites, and explore them as much as you would like. These are especially wonderful websites if you are at a loss for reading materials suitable for your child(ren), or if you would like your child(ren) to explore award-winning books.
