Physical
Education
The
goal of the physical education department is to provide
a foundation for the development of age-appropriate
movement skills, life skills and cooperation in a positive
environment. With a focus on respect for the body,
physical education instruction promotes life long physical
activity and wellness. Students are exposed to a variety
of fitness activities, in order to generate motivation
and encourage participation in sports and exercise
at home. In addition, physical education instruction
encourages positive social behavior through physical
activity and sports.
President's Challenge
Participation
in Physical Education at St. Joseph Catholic School
includes fitness testing in grades 3 – 8 using
the standards and criteria set up by the President’s
Council of Physical Fitness and Sports, otherwise known
as the President’s Challenge. The President’s
Challenge is done twice during the school year; a pre-test
in the first nine weeks of school, and then post-testing
in the last nine weeks of school. This allows for continued
development and improvement of fitness habits over
the course of the entire school year. Students are
given certificates for their hard work and achievement
at an end of the year award’s ceremony held in
the gymnasium. For students who excel in the President’s
Challenge their name and record of achievement is placed
on the Physical Education Fitness Record board and
displayed for the entire school. |
